The Mask and the Shadow in

Carl G. Jung wisely suggested that one of the first steps that must be taken to initiate an analysis is the clash of the Mask and Shadow, two archetypes present in the human psyche. Tarot serves to allow us to analyze the depth of our personality.

The concepts of "mask" and "shadow" from the personality theory of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl G. Jung (1875 - 1961).
Consider two concepts.

The "mask"
society requires us attitudes and behaviors to be accepted therein. Jung explains how it shapes the image of each individual through the concept of person, that facet of personality that represents our public image. The person responds to social demands, is the "mask" we wear to go out to the world. Begins as an archetype, and over time we will assume as their own, until it becomes a part of ourselves. The mask becomes a truth where the original individual-what-is frowned upon or disappears (is repressed) and that makes us different from the collective, goes to the unconscious, becoming "the dysfunctional" personality.

The word "character" is associated with role represents an actor on stage. Thus, in every social situation the individual plays 'characters' different, use different masks: it's friendly and smiles like a "good boy" with whom he is crying foul in transit, acts with indifference and passes some other silly . Thus, the mask used to cover the intimate life of the individual against others, and also allows you to adapt to the environment in terms that suit you best. This requires individual sacrifice many human factors (instincts, thinking and feeling) in favor of this "ideal image" that needs to reflect the individual. At its best, the mask is the "good print "we all want to give to the group. But at its worst, can be confused even to ourselves, that is, sometimes we believe we really are what we pretend to be or what others expect us to be, generating conflict and internal contradictions. As to what extent social follow the pattern in a "healthy"? and to what extent this mask comes as a source of neurosis?

sometimes with pain and wear man becomes alienated from himself the benefit of an artificial personality "adaptive." Those in social life are presented as "strong", "iron", are in the background, and maybe show him in his private life, "children" vulnerable, shy and somewhat melancholic. And others like to say "do not seem to break a plate" carry within them a lot of anger, resentment and revenge.

The "shadow"
According to Jung, the "shadow" is a hidden area of our personality, our darker side. It manifests itself in feelings and ideas that the same individual considered objectionable, irritating, messy and destructive, from learning what is socially "good" and "bad." Everyone has a shadow and, in one way or another, try to inhibit it, deny it or reject it. Thus, we can ignore what our shadow contains. Sometimes certain events need to occur in our life that reveal the dark area inhibited personality. It is when we hear: "I knew he was capable of hating so much," I do not know how I could do something so stupid, "" lost control ", etc.

In some cases we have some knowledge of our shadow, but ignore its scope. In others, there is a total denial: No! I'm not like ... "I would never do that." Or we project our shadow in others, assigning others to reject certain traits in ourselves.

Confronting our shadow can be a revelation, a discovery of ourselves and the only way to begin a transformative process of healing. Know it must raise an intention to change correction models and directed toward functional and harmonic life. Yield tamely to the power of the shadow on our personality is delivered, is not to try to improve ourselves. Phrases like "I'm like, I can not help it," "It's stronger than me," "accept me as I am," revealing the intention of not wanting to be better people. While the shadow is the product of our experiences (collective and individual) is not all that we can be. We can not deny, nor surrender to it.

Our repertoire contains archetypes upload personal vitality, creativity and joy that drive us to the fulfillment and happiness. But there are other sickly, tormented and destructive associated with our "shadow." We incorporate different archetypes simultaneously: with some people act, for example, from the victim and others from the warrior or the perpetrator. Archetype can change over time: in a time of our life we can be heroes and other villains, there are cases of "child model" that, as adults, become true "rogue" and young rebels who bequeathed to be "professional model."

Tarot serves a highly beneficial in allowing us to analyze the depth of our personality and more easily identify the archetypes that are at stake and our personal needs. With him become aware archetypes and symbols that reflect our mask and our shadow and also suggests answers and guidance.

Recognizing identify the archetypes that we can understand the why of our behavior and our circumstances. They are a clear expression of our psycho-emotional state (self-esteem, world of relationships, emotions, creativity, etc.) Of our level of consciousness and maturity. In our archetypes is implied a purely personal choice but unconscious and, therefore, charged with great power over our behavior, our choices and lifestyles.

larger the opening to see ourselves reflected in the Tarot, the greater the connection you make with him and he will be more suited to express our lives, our personal characteristics and processes.
