Ancient Mesopotamian deities IV: Enki


Images: first look Enki the god enthroned with two streams that emerge from his back. A bird-man is being brought before him to be eventually prosecuted (2300-2140 BC), the second is a record where the deity is seated, it emanates from the streams and two characters are prostrate before her figure with two banners. The scene is complete with sun, moon and some fish.
The god Enki (Ea in Akkadian) is an archaic city god of Eridu, whose main temple was dedicated to him. Enki, the Sumerian mythology, the creator of mankind from clay. The Sumerian tablets show as Enki god of purification water in ritual known as ablution house. It is a Sumerian god of water, fertility and wisdom. Arises from primeval chaos wet impregnating the land and giving life to the beings that inhabit it. Is the keeper of divine laws and Me (order without chaos, the attribute of civilization). He is represented sometimes as a being with fish body from which a human head and human feet.
