Thought in Ancient Greece, the Sophists

Sophists, those who teach wisdom, in a practical sense, are, in essence, educators (formal and dialectical handlers for Plato) Protagoras, Gorgias, PRODIC, Hippias, Callicles, among others. Are the direct result of economic, cultural and political in Athens, in relation to democracy and the law (considered by them merely conventional). They focused on practical problems, such as politics, morality, religion, education and language, but always with relativistic and skeptical attitude. They are the heirs, somehow, the educational role of poets, and so, rather than philosophers in a strict sense, be regarded as teachers of political leaders. Teach speech and rhetoric, and the powers of persuasion necessary to update the political leadership. In any case, his teachings are not a monolithic doctrine, although they are the creators of what some say as "humanism": that is, culture is interpreted as the cultivation of human nature. Retain the educational function of music and poetry, but not as an expression of sacred and mystical sense, but as means to develop human nature. Through this humanistic ideal explored the relationship between nature given to people and what they learned, suggesting that learning can be built on the nature of each person, a notion that clearly contending with the old aristocratic ideal, pointing out that the character was inherited, not learned. With them, we begin to see, then, individual rationality as a latent threat to the authority of the state, putting into question the cops in the traditional sense, and performing a critical task of the institutions and their functioning.
